I can only write based on my experience, but most of the religious people I know are motivated by fear. Fear of being isolated, fear of dying, and fear of losing their worldly possessions. I say fear of being isolated because one of the main reasons for professing their faith is to identify themselves as belonging to a group. But it’s the last two which motivate them to be so religious. Fear of dying is a normal human response. If religious people who are afraid of dying were merely to consider what their faith teaches them, they would most likely be able to at least lessen that fear. Of course, this is a tremendously complex subject, but to try to simplify it a bit, the fear of dying and the fear of isolation are like brothers. In death, we depart from those around us, with no guarantee that we will ever be with them again. What if we are still conscious after death, but there’s no one around? That’s why we sometimes shallowly refer to the dead as “the dear departed”. Fear of isolation is one of the most trenchant fears we can face.
